Abandoning Baby to Death, Two Students Threatened 9 Years in Prison

Jules explained that this case was uncovered when officers from the Jatinangor Police Station were patrolling on Cikeruh-Cilayung Road, on Tuesday at around 2:00 AM. The officers found a motorcycle parked on the roadside.

The member stopped and called the owner of the motorcycle. Then, MAM and AM emerged from the bushes. MAM's body appeared sweaty and his clothes were dirty from being exposed to the ground.

He emphasized that the two suspects were charged with two articles of the Criminal Code (KUHP), namely Article 306 concerning child abandonment and Article 341 concerning a mother who is afraid of being discovered giving birth to a child with deliberately took his son's life.

"Both of them are also charged with Article 77 B of Law Number 23 Year 2002 concerning child protection. They face a possible sentence of nine years in prison," said Jules.

He added that the suspect with the initials MAM has been held by the authorities since Wednesday (17/4/2024). "Suspect AM is not held because they are still undergoing outpatient treatment after a caesarean operation," he said.

The Acting Head of the Women and Child Protection Division at the West Java Women's Empowerment, Child Protection, and Family Planning Agency, Anjar Yusdinar, regrets the case of baby abandonment that resulted in death by two students in Sumedang.

According to Anjar, the actions of the two perpetrators must be processed legally according to applicable regulations.

He believes that both parties should find a way out to save the baby's life. The solution is to hand over the child to the local orphanage.

"Hopefully, this case can serve as a lesson for young couples. To become parents, they must have adequate preparation, both mentally and physically for the prospective mother, as well as financially," said Anjar.
